On Monday, June 10th Claretian Associates, CeaseFire’s South Chicago partner, hosted their 3rd Annual Community Prayer Vigil at 87th & Exchange as part of the CeaseFire Week 2013 citywide series of events to stop the violence.
CeaseFire Outreach Workers and Violence Interrupters along with a number of community partners, including Alliance of the Southeast, Work Together for Peace, and more gathered to promote the message of peace and non-violence.
Amalia NietoGomez, Interim Executive Director for the Alliance of the Southeast, came out in support of the event. “CeaseFire is one of our partners,” she said.
Taking momentary respite from helping set up the event beneath a canvas tent, NietoGomez elaborated, “(CeaseFire) are working with us on creating a safe zone on 91st Street. One of our biggest issues is neighborhood safety and there are so many community groups on 91st–Metropolitan Family Services, the YMCA, the Public Library, two churches, South Chicago Art Center–so we are trying to create a safe zone–a neutral zone–where youth and neighborhood residents can feel safe walking and taking advantage of services. CeaseFire has been critical to that work.”
